Q. What are the minimum system requirements for Tribes 2?

A.  Minimum Requirements: Windows® 95B/98/00/NT 4.0; Pentium II 400 MHz (Please note supported video cards); 64 MB RAM (128 MB RAM suggested); 531 MB hard drive space; 4x Speed CD-ROM; Direct Sound Compatible Sound Card; Direct Input game controllers supported; 12MB or better video card.  Supported Video Cards: Pentium II: 300 MHz w/ GeForce & GeForce 2, Diamond Viper II, Ati Rage 128, or Pentium II: 400 MHz w/ TNT, TNT 2, Radeon, Matrox G400 & G450 Voodoo 3, or Pentium III: 500 MHz w/ Voodoo 2, Voodoo 4, Voodoo 5, Kyro Permedia 3.  Note: Personally I recommend you to have a CPU at least 100-200 MHz above the minimum requirements if you want to play with half-decent detail rates.

Q. I have an Nvidia video card, what drivers are people getting the best results from?

 A. Dynamix tested Tribes 2 with the Nvidia 6.50 drivers available from http://www.nvidia.com/products.nsf/htmlmedia/detonator3.html .  However: A number of people including myself have had increased success with some of Nvidia’s Beta drivers – the 12.00s.  You can get these drivers here: http://3dchipset.com/beta/nvidia/1200/os.html (for Windows 98, Me, and 2k.)

 Q.  Which video drivers did Dynamix use for QA testing with Tribes 2?

 A.  Dynamix used the following drivers for their video cards.  However, your performance may vary – these may work better, but may not be as good as some of the newer versions, even if the newer ones are in beta.  (Namely the 12.00 Nvidia drivers.)

TNT: Det 6.50 (Runs best in D3D)
TNT2: Det 6.50 (Runs best in OpenGL)
Vanta: Det 6.50 (Runs best in D3D)
GeForce: Det 6.50 (Runs best in OpenGL)
GeForce2 (all): Det 6.50 (Runs best in OpenGL)
Voodoo 5 & 4 : 1.04.00 (Runs best in Direct3D); Note: Some folks have said that you need to use the November release of these drivers...not the February release. This MAY have something to do with the UE problem. Try it out if you are having that problem.

Voodoo 3 : 1.07.00 (ONLY runs in D3D)
Voodoo 2 : 3.02.00 (ONLY runs in D3D)
Matrox G400 & G450 : w9x_623 (runs well in both D3D & OpenGL...not much difference, slightly better in OpenGL)
Diamond Viper II : w9x_95103 (ONLY runs in OpenGL and not at all on Win95B)
ATI Rage 128 & 128 Pro : 4.12.6269 (runs best in OpenGL and not on W95B at all)
ATI Rage Fury Maxx : 4.11.01.7925 (runs best in OpenGL)
Permedia 3 : 21070825 (Runs best in D3D)
PowerVR Kyro 3 : OEM Drivers (ONLY in D3D)

I believe Dave inferred that he’d recommend the newer beta drivers for Nvidia cards over the 6.50, but they can’t.  (I’ve got a vague memory today so don’t take my word on this.)

Q. How do I enable the FPS counter in Tribes 2?

 A. You can grab PJ's script pack which contains a graphical FPS hud or you can do it the hard way:

First, bring down your game’s console by hitting the default console key ( ~ )  Then type in one of the following (it doesn’t matter which one, they all work, but some display more information than others.):

show("$fps::real");
show("framecounter()");
ShowAudio();

To close the FPS counter, go back to the console and type:

show();

 Make sure that what you type there is EXACTLY what is listed above, or else it will not work.

Q. I get horrid FPS with my 3dfx Voodoo card, any ideas on how to improve the performance?

A. Da/\an has a pretty complete tweaking the Voodoo for T2 guide right here @ PT.  http://www.planettribes.com/daman/tribes2/tweak/  Also, forcing the video card into Direct3D mode using the instructions in the question below will help if you aren't already running in Direct3D.

Also, you can install the WickedGL drivers, they provide a HUGE increase in FPS... grab 'em here.

Q. D3D isn't an option with my 3dfx Voodoo card, what's wrong?

A.  [From Dynamix] First of all, it should be noted that D3D is the only video mode that should be enabled for the very reason he mentions here (blocky weirdness in the the shell). The problem here is that some people don't have the correct driver for the video card (these would be located at www.3dfx.com ). Although glSetup is included it isn't necessarily up to date.  Second of all, it should also be noted that if a video card doesn't have a specific video mode and the user has the correct driver which can also be found here.

Q. D3D still doesn't work for me, how can I force it?

A. I'd only try this with 3DFX Voodoo cards.  This benefits them mostly.  Here is an email I got from Ostermo via the Shifter mailing list:

My bud is running a p3 500 Vodoo3 3000 First after the setup, all of the letters on the login screen were just strange looking graphic blocks. There was no way to get into the settings in the game because it was just unreadable. So I forced it into D3D mode by changing the following lines in the ClientPrefs.cs file in his C:\Dynamix\Tribes2\GameData\base\prefs directory.
ONLY CHANGE THESE LINES IF YOUR TEXT IS GARBLED AND YOU CANNOT READ LOGIN TEXT OTHERWISE GO TO THE DOWNLOAD ADDRESS FOR OpenGL32!
Original line
$pref::Video::allowOpenGL = "1";
$pref::Video::displayDevice = "OpenGL";
$pref::Video::preferOpenGL = "1";
$pref::Video::resolution = "800 600 32";

Changed to
$pref::Video::allowOpenGL = "0";
$pref::Video::displayDevice = "D3D";
$pref::Video::preferOpenGL = "0";
$pref::Video::resolution = "800 600 16";

Also make sure your desktop display settings are at 16 bit. Whichever you run, make sure they match in depth of colors.
That worked. Were weren’t reading Klingon anymore.
Then the game would crash at the login verification screen with that UE error in the small window. I then downloaded the latest
OpenGl from this page http://www.glsetup.com/where.htm and ran the GLsetup program, which enabled the game to run properly with OpenGL.
** WARNING ** This OpenGL DRIVER IS NOT FOR WIN2K OR NT **

The game now runs in both D3D and OpenGL.
Good Luck!

Q. My in-game player textures look blurred and at a low quality – how do I fix this?

 A. The hard way to do it is to extract the textures from your skins.vl2 and edit the names of the _512 textures, deleting the 512 and placing them in the /base/textures/skins directory.  However, Rypht put these all in a handy-dandy .zip file for easy use.  Make sure you read the readme.txt included with the file.  Download here: http://dl.fileplanet.com/dl/dl.asp?planetstarsiege/t2hires.zip

Q. After a while of play my Jet button works in reverse, any fix?

 A. All you have to do is bring down the console during the game ( ~ ) and type "mousejet(0);" (without the quotes.)

Q. I have a SoundBlaster 128 sound card, and I have to disable the card just to play Tribes 2!  What gives?

A. First try updating your drivers from http://www.soundblaster.com .  If that doesn’t work one user (Silent Strike) reported going into “dxdiag” (Start>Run>dxdiag) and changing his audio acceleration from full to one notch down (standard) solved his problem.

Q. Help!  After the last patch I’m still getting “Unhandled Exception” errors!  Any ideas?

 A.  The patch fixed the .AVI codec bug.  There could be one or two more causes lingering around that haven’t been located yet.  Try updating all your drivers, reinstalling DirectX, reinstalling Tribes 2 & all the patches before playing again.

Q. What happened to the manual add of servers & the stop refresh button?!

 A. Don’t worry; Dynamix is releasing yet another (5th) patch soon that’ll add these features.

Q. I keep lagging out of servers; the red phone jack icon appears over my compass.  What gives?

A. Don’t worry; Dynamix is releasing yet another (5th) patch soon that’ll fix this bug in Tribes 2.  This is also named the infamous “red jack” error.

Q. How can I create my own clan?  So it appears in yellow print?

 A. You can't currently do this since the community is offline, but when it's up, the options will be located under the "Community" tab.

Q. Can I configure my favorites outside of Tribes 2?

A. Yes, you can use the T2Favs utility for Windows to configure your favorites outside of Tribes 2.

Q. I have a Microsoft Intellieye Explorer Optical mouse, my thumb buttons do not work in Tribes 2, is there a known fix?

A. PanamaJack informed us that it will be in the next release of his script pack.

Benjamin Giggles sends word of a fix:

To enable the 4th and 5th mouse buttons go to Tribes2\gamedata\base\prefs open clientprefs.cs with a text editor.

Find this line:

$pref::Input::MouseEnabled = "0";

and change it to:

$pref::Input::MouseEnabled = "1";

save and close it then run tribes.

Go to launch>settings>controls double click the command you want to bind and press the corresponding mouse button.

I know it’s this isn’t written well, but it’s just like turning on shadows in tribes 1, just find the line change it and bind the commands through the game.

Q. Do I have to have the Tribes 2 CD in the drive to play the game?

A. Yes, for both Solo / LAN and Online play.

Q. I’m unfamiliar with Tribes & Tribes 2.  Where can I find a guide that explains the basics of the game?

A. One recently went online at Gamer’s Pulse.

Q. Does Tribes 2 Require DirectX 8.0?

A. Officially, yes.  In reality, no.  If your having problems with DX8, you may have success with DirectX 7... however there may be unknown disadvantages.  I recommend DirectX 8.0a if it does not interfere with anything else on your system.

Q. How do I access the Tribes 2 Mission Editor?  CTRL-E as stated in the manual doesn't work!

 A. To start a new map bring down the console ( ~ ) and type exactly:

editor.open();

To edit an existing map, press alt-e.

Q. I get an error unlisted here or on the forums, any pointers?

 A. Before you ask questions on the forums, try to do the following:
             a) Reinstall the latest versions of your Video, Sound & Chipset drivers.

           b) Reinstall DirectX 8.0a.

           c) Reinstall Tribes 2 and patch to the latest patch before playing.

If that doesn’t work, post questions, and hope someone has had a similar problem.

Q. Are my favorite scripts being made for Tribes 2?

A. Yes. Right now there are about a dozen scripts written for Tribes 2 to include jump/jet. You can find them almost at any major Tribes 2 site. Links are also available at http://www.longdongles.com/links.htm . Presto, Zear, Writer, Cowboy, PJ and several others are hard at work to make your favorite huds and scripts for Tribes 2. Please be patient and give them time to create a good working
product.

Q. What are the Tribes 2 directories and what do they do?

A.
Tribes2 - main tribes directory; holds the install, executable w/icons and the uninstaller
Tribes2/GameData - holds the compatible card files, ispawn.exe (dedicated server software for windows), OpenGL drivers, your screenshots
(screen*.pgn), your warrior information, the tribes 2 executables, T2 login info, and the patch information file
Tribes2/GameData/_SierraUpdatePatch - the directory where the first GOLD patch goes to
Tribes2/GameData/base - where all the other major files are... see below
Tribes2/GameData/patch - holds all your patches and the text file which tells T2 what patch you have
Tribes2/GameData/base/fonts - fonts used in the communities and display screens
Tribes2/GameData/base/gui - email, browser, chat, servers, command, console, tribes, warrior, driver, settings, editor, huds, joystick, launcher,
recordings and all other GUI interfaces for the game
Tribes2/GameData/base/lighting - where the lighting effects for each map get loaded
Tribes2/GameData/base/music - terrain mp3's get loaded
Tribes2/GameData/base/prefs - holds all your configs to include ClientPrefs, banlist, keyboard config, ServerPrefs, etc.
Tribes2/GameData/base/scripts - scripts that load the GUIs go here
Tribes2/GameData/base/scripts/vehicles - the vehicle hud file goes here
Tribes2/GameData/base/textures - holds the textures for each terrain/world set as well as the intro .avi file
Tribes2/GameData/base/webcache - holds all emails, forums, community information... deleting these will set all lists to unread and will erase
any and all email.
Tribes2/GameData/base/prefs/autoexec - any script in this directory will automatically get loaded and executed

Q. How do I set an admin password to a server?

A. Create a ServerConfig.cs file in Tribes2/GameData/base/prefs/autoexec

Setting Admin Password:
$Host::AdminPassword=blah;

How do I set a admin password in game (or use it)?

Setting Admin Password in game:
SAD(password);

Q. Why can't bots play in certain maps?

 A. You can download advanced bot support for every map at Belial's Bots.

Q. How do I start up a dedicated server (not using ispawn)?

A. Dedicated Server Startup:
Tribes2/tribes2.exe -bot X -dedicated
(whereas X is # of AI bots to load)

Q. How do I rebind the mousewheel to change the FOV in game?

A. Open up Tribes2/GameData/base/prefs/MyConfig.cs and edit/add...
moveMap.bind(mouse0,"zaxis",setZoomFOV);

Q. Where can I find a mapping tutorial?

A. http://web.lemuria.org/T2beta/Mapping/

Q. Will there be a Tribes 2 Demo?

A. Yes, however there is no current release date out.

Q. How do I set up my ServerConfig.cs file?

A. Use Notepad to create a Tribes2/GameData/base/prefs/ServerConfig.cs file...

$Host::allowAdminPlayerVotes = "1";
$Host::BanTime = 1800;
$Host::BotCount = 4;
$Host::BotsEnabled = "1";
$Host::Dedicated = "0";
$Host::FloodProtectionEnabled = 1;
$Host::GameName = "Wiggys Game";
$Host::Info = "This is the Wigsters server";
$Host::KickBanTime = 300;
$Host::Map = "RiverDance";
$Host::MaxBotDifficulty = "0.882558";
$Host::MaxMessageLen = 120;
$Host::MaxPlayers = "64";
$Host::MinBotDifficulty = "0.283953";
$Host::MissionType = "CTF";
$Host::NoSmurfs = 0;
$Host::PlayerRespawnTimeout = "60";
$Host::Port = "28000";
$Host::RulesSet = "Base";
$Host::TimeLimit = "20";
$Host::TournamentMode = "0";
$Host::VotePassPercent = "60";
$Host::VoteTime = "20";
$Host::WarmupTime = "20";

Setting Server IP Specific in ServerConfig:
$host::bindaddress = "<ip_address>";
Example: $host::bindaddress = "10.0.0.15";
* can be put in serverprefs.cs

To specify a port
$host::port = "28000";
* can be put in serverprefs.cs

For other server settings look in the serverdefaults.cs file. To get to it you need to unzip scripts.vl2 Though, I do advise you keep the files you
unzip separate from your Tribes2 installation to keep things from getting corrupted. Uze WinZip to unzip .v12 files.

Q. How do I change the base skins for my server?

A. make the directory Tribes2/Gamedata/base/textures/skins
extract the skinsets you want from skins.vl2 using winzip.
you need the whole set of (i'll use blood eagle as an example)

beagle.flag.bm8
beagle.flag.png
beagle.hmale.bm8
beagle.hmale.png
beagle.lfemale.bm8
beagle.lfemale.png
beagle.lmale.bm8
beagle.lmale.png
beagle.mfemale.bm8
beagle.mfemale.png
beagle.mmale.bm8
beagle.mmale.png
beagle.switch.bm8
beagle.switch.png

You will also need to extract two of the three bioderm skinsets, pick the two that best suit the two team skins you're going to use. For
example i'm using the storm and inferno ones, as harbingers are basically yellow and star wolf basically white this works just fine.

Rename the first set of skins

base.<skintype>.<extension>

so in the beagle example the first 2 would be

base.flag.bm8
base.flag.png

rename the second set

baseb.<skintype>.<extension>

thus if our second set were diamond sword

dsword.flag.bm8
dsword.flag.png

would become

baseb.flag.bm8
baseb.flag.png

Do the same thing with the 2 Bioderm sets you chose, that is, rename one
set

base.<biodermtype>.<extension>

and the other set

baseb.<biodermtype>.<extension>

just so you know

base = storm
baseb = inferno

Now if you want to make everything all nice and neat you might want to bother renaming the base skins to the tribes you've used, but i didn't
bother, it'd just mean if you were on a server using the tribe skins properly you'd see the base (storm and inferno) skins instead.

To change the holograms for CnH ...

make the directory Tribes2/Gamedata/base/shapes

extract from shapes.vl2

teamlogo_<tribe>.dts

and rename it as above

I'm guessing:

bd = bioderm
be = blood eagle
ds = diamond sword
hb = harbingers of the phoenix
inf = inferno
storm = storm
sw = star wolf

<sw is star wolf and hb is harbingers, so i'm probably right about the rest;
so for example teamlogo_storm.dts>

Q. What is the minimum requirements to run a dedicated server?

A. So far a P3 or Athlon 500, 128mb ram, any SVGA video card, DSL/Cable, Windows or Linux. When I compile a complete server requirement list, I'll post it.

Q. Is it still possible to get mid-air shots with the disc launcher?

A. Yes.

Q. Are their roll controls for air vehicles?

A. Yes and no. The only way to roll a craft is to jet and turn. You can do a vertical 180 and then adjust your altitude.  You can also cause a wing to hit a mountain or other object and you can go into a roll - but you have to be a VERY good pilot to accomplish this.

Q. Will the new physics engine allow for a lot of the same dueling tactics to still be used, or will you really have to re-learn how to go toe-to-toe again?

A. The skills you have learned from Tribes will definitely help you in Tribes 2. The major things to learn in the game are vehicles, armor, weapons, use of stations, and placement of devices.

Q. Can I run a Linux Tribes Server without buying the Linux Client Pack?

A. Yes, the Linux Dedicated Server executable comes on the Windows version of Tribes 2 CD.

Q. Does the game have an online chatting program like Roger Wilco?

A. Sort of. The game comes with microphone usage built in. You can select who you want to mute and who you want to listen to you.

Q. Does Tribes 2 support multiple processor usage?

A. No.  It will work with SMP CPUs, but it won't take advantage of the second one.

Q. What's the lag situation in Tribes 2 as compared to Tribes 1?

A. Lag in Tribes 2 is caused not only by your internet connection, but by the server itself and how quickly your processor can exchange information and return it back. Some with lower systems such as a P 300 or with 56.6k may experience a little more lag than one would with a DSL connection and a P 700. But, those who turn up their video settings to the max with having a server in the middle may experience lag as well due to the fact that even the GF2 cards take two passes to render everything. The GF3 only takes one swipe at the graphics so it is a lot faster than 5th generation cards.

Q. Are multiple waypoints supported in Tribes 2?

A. In a way, yes. Once you acknowledge a command, a waypoint is set to that task. You also have waypoints for bases, objectives and flag carriers.

Q. What causes Tribes 2 to crash in Single Player Missions?

A. Nine out of ten crashes are caused by not having the all the patches installed.

Q. Are we stuck with Software/OpenGL and Glide support in T2 or is there a Direct3D display mode option?

A. There are two rendering modes for Tribes 2. One is D3D and the other is OpenGL. There is no Glide support for Tribes 2.

Q. What does the blank "ERROR" screen mean in the community section of Tribes 2?

A. It means that the Community is down at that point and time. Try back later.

Q. I get an Unhandled Exception error at c00000005. How do I correct this?

A. Try de-installing T2, installing it and then getting your patches from another site. Also, check your driver sets.  You can also try the first aid utility after the reinstallation and before patches to verify that there is no corruption in your installation.  If this doesn't work, try the FAQ entry at UpsetChaps' T2 Guide.

A possible fix from James:

 When I took out the OpenGL2D3.dll,  From the Game data folder,  But I left it in the Dynamix folder outside of the Tribes2.  My game started up just fine.  I was having the ue  c0000005 come up ,
But now it doesn't happen.  For tnt2 m64 is my card  I hope this will work for you guys.  And im running a celeron 400 mhz

Q. I get a "CD key already in use" error. How can that be?

A. All it means is that your name is already registered by another player. Choose a different warrior name. If it continues, contact Sierra Technical Support or return your CD for a new copy.  However, the latest patch has fixed this error.  If you're still receiving these errors, contact Sierra Tech Support.

Q. I get a black screen on boot-up and can't play. How can I correct this?

A. First of all patch to the most current level. If that doesn't work, then do the following. Open up your Tribes2/GameData/base/prefs/ClientPrefs.cs file with notepad and edit the following lines...

$pref::Audio::activeDriver = "Miles";
$pref::Audio::captureGainScale = "1";
$pref::Audio::channels = 2;
$pref::Audio::decodingMask = 1;
$pref::Audio::drivers = "Miles";
$pref::Audio::effectsVolume = "1";
$pref::Audio::enableVoiceCapture = "0";
$pref::Audio::encodingLevel = 0;
$pref::Audio::environmentEnabled = "0";
$pref::Audio::forceMaxDistanceUpdate = 0;
$pref::Audio::frequency = "11025";
$pref::Audio::guiVolume = "0.8";
$pref::Audio::masterVolume = "0.8";
$pref::Audio::musicEnabled = "0";
$pref::Audio::musicVolume = "0.8";
$pref::Audio::provider = "Miles Fast 2D Positional Audio";
$pref::Audio::radioVolume = "0.8";
$pref::Audio::sampleBits = "8";
$pref::audio::speakerType = "Headphones";
$pref::Audio::voiceChannels = 2;
$pref::Audio::voiceVolume = "1";
$pref::Input::ActiveConfig = "MyConfig";
$pref::Input::JoystickEnabled = "0";
$pref::Input::KeyboardEnabled = "1";
$pref::Input::KeyboardTurnSpeed = 0.1;
$pref::Net::PacketRateToClient = "20";
$pref::Net::PacketRateToServer = "32";
$pref::Net::PacketSize = "350";
$pref::Net::simPacketLoss = 0;
$pref::Net::simPing = 0;
$pref::OpenGL::force16BitTexture = "0";
$pref::OpenGL::forcePalettedTexture = "1";
$pref::SkipIntro = "1";
$pref::TS::autoDetail = "1";
$pref::TS::detailAdjust = "0.933333";
$pref::Video::allowD3D = "1";
$pref::Video::allowOpenGL = "1";
$pref::Video::appliedPref = "1";
$pref::Video::clipHigh = "0";
$pref::Video::deleteContext = "1";
$pref::Video::disableVerticalSync = 1;
$pref::Video::displayDevice = "D3D";
$pref::Video::fullScreen = "0";
$pref::Video::only16 = "0";
$pref::Video::preferOpenGL = "0";
$pref::Video::resolution = "800 600 32";
$pref::Video::safeModeOn = "1";
$pref::visibleDistanceMod = "1";

You may also have to disable your sound card for the first time playing. The reason being is the game supports Miles voice rather than EAX.

Q. What ports are to be opened in a firewall for Tribes 2?

A. Ports 28000-28009, 6667-6669, and upper UDP ports 1024+.

Q. How do I use the infinite spawn server program / tool?

A. There is an executable for server operators called ispawn.exe. Just like the tool for Tribes 1, ispawn allows you to restart your dedicated server in case of a unexpected interruption of the program. Usage is fairly simple - from a shortcut or a command prompt execute:

ispawn.exe <port> <executable command>

where port is the server port setting and executable command is Tribes2.exe followed by any parameters you want passed to the game. Example:

ispawn.exe 28000 Tribes2.exe -dedicated -mission Katabatic CTF

If the server keeps restarting every minute or so, it is likely that you entered the wrong server port.
